This fall, the Motor City Freedom Riders are hosting “Transit Organizing 101,” a three-part training in how we can organize effectively to win better transit service. We plan to host this course twice a year.

Classes are free and open to the public. They’ll be held at the Swords into Plowshares Peace Center attached to Central United Methodist Church, 23 E. Adams at Woodward in downtown Detroit. Food will be provided.

Part 1: The Politics of Transit
Saturday, October 7, 12 – 2 pm
Swords into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, 33 E. Adams St, Detroit, MI 48226

Why doesn’t metro Detroit have more public transit? The automakers are only part of the story. To win the fight for transit, we need to understand the forces that have held us back, and how racial and economic inequality operate in the political system of our region. We also need to know the basics of how transit agencies are funded and governed in our region to navigate that landscape strategically.

Part 2: Building Power for Transit Riders
Monday, November 13, 6 pm – 8 pm
Swords into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, 33 E. Adams St, Detroit, MI 48226

Given the power we’re up against, the fight for transit will require building people power. The more people, the more power! This training will cover the basics of how we grow our movement through community organizing, with an emphasis on communication for outreach and relationship-building.

Part 3: Running Effective Campaigns
Time and place TBA, sometime in early December.

Once we’ve built people power, what do we do with it? We need targeted campaigns to take on the political establishment of the region and clear the path to expanded public transit. This training will delve into how we can build effective and strategic campaigns – and win!
